DAY ONE - 2012 National Championships
The first day of the national championships in Wollongong resulted in Victoria winning the most gold medals - securing 9, together with 4 silver medals and 7 bronze. The Jolly brothers from Victoria had a great day with Bryan winning the cadet men 50kg and Kim getting a gold in the junior men 55kg division.
NSW won in the overall medal tally with a total of 35 medals – 7 gold, 9 silver and 19 bronze. Brothers Nathan and Joshua Katz both won gold in their divisions. Josh won the cadet men 55 kg weight class and Nathan took out the junior men 66kg division.
London Olympian Carli Renzi won the womens 57kg division and fellow Olympic team member Ivo dos Santos won the mens under 66kg division.
One of the highlights of the day was having 22 former Olympians and all of the current London Olympic team take part in the opening ceremony. Maria Pekli, two time Australian Olympic representative and bronze medallist at the Sydney Games, mentioned that it was wonderful to get together with so many former Olympians at the Championships and to be given recognition at the opening ceremony was really nice. Maria also made special mention of how focussed Hanna Trotter was in the 52kg womens division – Hanna went through to clench the Australian Title.
Colin Hill JFA President mentioned that it was a successful day with great judo spirit and it was an historic event as the JFA staged the Championships for the first time. He was also impressed with the many people that helped out in running the event.
Colin went on to say the Championships will continue tomorrow, Sunday, with another full day packed with judo action including London Olympian Mark Anthony competing for the last time on Australian soil before heading off overseas to complete his Olympic preparation.
