The landscape of judo in Australia is ever changing, but the stats don’t lie – here are Australia’s ten biggest clubs by membership.
After years of domination by Warren Rosser’s UNSW Judo Club, the Western Australians have stolen the march, moving to the number one spot to lead the country in registered members.
This is testimony to the hard work the UniWA club has been doing to offer a variety of classes to appeal to a wide variety of members. Promotion is key, said Judo Australia’s Shane Alvisio.
“People want to know what you have to offer as a club, and how they can form part of your community. And becoming a member means every judoka is protected, connected and their hard work recognised by a national grading system,” he explained.
He also paid tribute to Warren Rosser and his UniNSW club which has been at the top of league table for more than 20 years.
“And UniNSW hasn’t gone backwards at all, they have been signing up new members and do really well at offering our people new ways of connecting to judo, but it’s just happening more quickly over in the west at the moment,” Shane said.
Budokan Judo Club in Sydney sit proudly at number 3 with 205 members, and close on their tail is the newly combined force of Adelaide Uni, with 201 members.
Beyond Grappling in Canberra coming in 5th place with 173 registered members across their booming Judo and BJJ club.
National Participation Manager, Shane Alvisio is encouraging clubs to check their membership data over the next few weeks as we move towards the next event on the NES calendar, the Melbourne International Open.
“Many clubs find some members slip off the radar and become unregistered, some without even knowing it. This means when they try to register for an event, they’ll get a rude shock when they are told they can’t fight,” Shane said.
Unregistered judoka cannot participate in NES events, training camps or seminars, or study tours run by Judo Australia or our state members. Nor are they a good bet on the mat for training, as they are not covered by the Judo Australia insurance, and as such can endanger the club’s own insurance coverage.
Judo Australia members are protected by insurance and the National Integrity Framework, connected to the wider judo community, and can participate in the national grading system to have judo progress nationally and internationally recognised.
