Team Australia on the mat early this morning in Guayaquil:
With the draw for the Cadet World Championships finalised this morning, four young athletes from opposite corners of the country will carry Australia’s hopes into the world’s peak competition for teen judoka.
On Day 1 of competition – taking place from 1am AEST on Saturday morning – Kaian Kelly from Western Australia’s UWA Judo Club will take the mat in the U60kg division.
On Day 2, from 12.30am AEST on Sunday morning, the two Queensland girls, Rika Hirose, from Hirose Judo Academy on Queensland’s Gold Coast in the U52kg, and Lisa Caravello from Ohori Judo Club in Brisbane in the U57kg.
On Day 3, screening in the early hours of Monday morning for Australia, Kai Topp, also from Ohori in Brisbane, will step up for the U81kg.

The final block of each competition is scheduled to take place from 8am AEST daily.
Fun fact: athletes from the rest of the world might have found weigh in a bit more exciting than they’re used to – the magic of being close to the Equator means those from northern or southern ends of the globe will have weighed in lighter!
