Expanding horizons for Judo

Judo Australia welcomes Horizon 2 of Play Well

The Australian Sports Commission has launched Horizon 2 of the National Sports Participation Strategy, Play Well, renewing Judo Australia’s commitment to creating better Judo experiences in Clubs around the country.

Nationally, Horizon 2 of Play Well shifts the focus from alignment to action – Judo Australia is tasked with helping Clubs and our State members to work together to remove barriers, create better experiences, and make Judo more welcoming, inclusive and enjoyable for everyone.

Building on the foundation laid in Horizon 1, Judo Australia will expand efforts to build capability in coaching, make judo more accessible and welcoming, and develop opportunities for people to meet their personal goals through Judo.

Play Well initiatives in Horizon 1 included the J-Girls program to build female participation in judo, programs capturing the potential of Judo to improve outcomes for older Australians, and assisting learning and development through coaching, Club seminars around the country, and engaging with the Kodokan.

“Judo isn’t just exercise or self-defence.  It’s an entire system of self-development and social connection that helps people to reach their full potential,” said Gareth Watkins, Judo Australia’s general manager of Participation.

“Whether it be celebrating the work you’ve put in through a brand new belt recognised by the National Digital Grading System, or providing competition opportunities at a local, national and international level, or simply having fun on the mat with your friends, Judo has a place and a program for everyone.”
