New leader takes up the challenge for Judo Australia

Judo Australia is pleased to announce the appointment of Gareth Watkins as its new General Manager of Participation.

Gareth brings a strong blend of strategic, commercial, and operational leadership to the role, with senior experience across fintech, government programs, and a number of sporting organisations.

At Judo Australia, Gareth will provide operational leadership across the organisation, ensure alignment with key strategic priorities, and oversee the implementation of Judo Australia’s strategic plan.

A key focus over the next 18 months will be the successful delivery of the PlayWell Strategy, aimed at increasing participation, strengthening sport capability, and deepening community engagement with Judo across Australia.

Chair of Judo Australia, Simon Read, welcomed the appointment.

“We are delighted to welcome Gareth as our new General Manager of Participation. His leadership across sport, government programs, and commercial environments presents an exciting opportunity for Judo Australia.

Gareth’s proven ability to deliver high-impact strategic and operational initiatives will be instrumental in implementing our Participation Plan and expanding the sport’s reach throughout Australian communities.”

Gareth shared his enthusiasm about joining the organisation: “I’m truly honoured to take on this role and to work with the Board, staff, and the wider Judo community to grow and strengthen the sport at every level.

I look forward to collaborating with our state organisations, clubs, members, and volunteers to ensure Judo remains inclusive, engaging, and sustainable into the future. Like all sports, we face challenges and opportunities, and I’m committed to finding innovative ways to grow Judo and make the complex simple.”

Gareth joins Judo Australia from July 14, 2025.
