Judo Australia has listened to clubs around the country and relaxed the rules to ensure as many Clubs as possible can participate in the inaugural National Club Teams Competition, taking place in Bendigo,Victoria, October 18-20.
Clubs are now permitted to invite judoka from another club to join their team to make up the required number of judoka or the appropriate gender balance.
In Teams judo, male and female judoka compete as a team, each representing a different weight category in an exciting format that showcases team spirit, co-operation, mutual support and the core values of judo. This rules change will enable clubs to extend that co-operation beyond their own borders.
If Club A, for example, has just 4 judoka able to compete in the Teams event, they may invite two judoka from Club B to enter the event under their name. The name of the team will be Club A, and victories earned will be attributed to Club A. The idea is to allow as many clubs as possible to enter a team, rather than encourage the creation of "super teams" with members drawn from a range of different clubs.
More than 10 Club Team categories are available to be contested across the full range of age groups from Junior Boys & Girls to Veterans; cost of entry for each category is $300.
All teams - in any age category - must field a minimum of four judoka including at least one female judoka; ideally teams will comprise four male and two female players, from no more than two judo clubs (and competing under the name of one of those clubs.)
