Australia’s judo community will be in the hot seat for the 2032 Olympic Games – and Judo Australia is investing now to ensure our tournament staff are ready to pick up the challenge. Under our National Mentor Program, three $1000 scholarships will be offered to members ready to step up and organise a new or existing event.
The recipients will be ably supported by Judo Australia’s National Participation Manager, Shane Alvisio. Shane has organised local, state and national Judo events, and is keen to build our roster of event organisation talent.
These Mentorships aim to enhance event organisation skills, help build a consistent, top-quality service across events around the country, and unlock the secrets of building large judo events that satisfy all members of the judo community, from athletes and referees to spectators and the volunteer army you are being asked to co-ordinate.
Mentor applicants will be asked to stage a new event or organise at least one day of existing multi-day events, with options ranging across all of the events Judo Australia organises or shares organisation of:
- National Championships – Senior & Junior
- National Kyu Grade Championships
- National Veterans Championships
- National Kata Championships
- National Adaptive Championships
- National Schools Championships
- Uni Sport Nationals
- National Military Championships
Other events could potentially include:
- National Club Team Championships
- State Club Team Championships
- National Emergency Services Games (Gold Coast 2025)
- National Ne-Waza Championships
- National No-Gi Championships
- National Randori & Adventure Camp (for non-competitive judoka)
- National or South Pacific Masters Games
Any of the above events could be stand alone events OR be piggybacked with existing State International Opens or State Championships.
After choosing an event to organise, our future Tournament masterminds will be expect to building and organise their own Tournament Management Team, along with the assistance of the existing State or National Tournament Management Teams. You will be supported (and expected to stay in close contact) with the National Sport Director mentor OR the National Participation Manager mentor.
Mentorship will be ongoing throughout 2025-2026 to provide advice and feedback on the initiatives for each particular event with the Scholarship recipient. The National Mentor Program is a Judo Australia initiative funded under the Australian Sports Commission’s PlayWell strategy.
